Dear Grievance Officer,
I am writing to raise a formal grievance regarding incorrect Merchant Category Code (MCC) classification applied to my recent Flipkart transaction corresponding to Order ID: <>
Although the purchase is clearly of electronic goods (HSN 85171300 – Mobile Handset + 85044030 – Charger), the payment has been processed under MCC 5942, which corresponds to “School & Educational Supplies.” Due to this incorrect MCC, my cashback benefit on the SBI Cashback Credit Card (5%) has been unfairly denied despite the transaction being a straightforward electronics purchase.
I am attaching:
1. The Flipkart Invoice (showing goods classification under the correct HSN)
2. The SBI Cards written response confirming MCC 5942 was transmitted by merchant
MCC is assigned at the merchant/acquirer level, not by the card issuer. Therefore, the misclassification originates from Flipkart’s payment gateway/acquiring bank, and not from SBI. This constitutes misreporting of merchant category and has resulted in financial loss to me (5% of ₹xxxx ≈ ₹937.70).
As per RBI’s merchant transparency norms and fair trade practices, I request:
1. Correction of MCC mapping for the said transaction
2. Either:
   (a) reimbursement/compensation equivalent to the cashback amount lost (xxxx), OR
   (b) correction of MCC at the acquirer-side and confirmation to SBI for cashback applicability
Kindly initiate resolution on priority and confirm the same in writing.
Please also share a ticket number / acknowledgment for this grievance for regulatory tracking.
Looking forward to your timely response.
Regards,
