Few years back they used to provide 5X of utility bills as well when we use our card in Amazon/Payzapp etc, not sure about now
Here’s a breakdown of how this worked:
From the beginning, this card offered
5x rewards for online shopping, travel, or dining based on specific MCCs (Merchant Category Codes) and it still does. However, it’s the
MCC itself, not the category of the purchase, that determines if you get 5x rewards.
For example:
- If you buy fuel but it’s processed under a shopping MCC, you’ll still get 5x rewards.
- Conversely, if you shop but the transaction posts with a utility MCC, you’ll receive 0 rewards.
In other words, it’s not whether the purchase aligns with the intended category, but rather if the
MCC sent by the POS or payment gateway matches a 5x category. If it does, you’re good for 5x rewards; if not, you get nothing.
For instance, Amazon was once classified as a shopping MCC across the board, meaning any purchase there qualified for 5x rewards. But now, they’ve refined their system to assign MCCs more accurately based on the specific category of the transaction.
Still, this MCC “loophole” can apply to other sites. For example, on
PayZapp you can load funds at 3.75% cashback and use that balance freely essentially working around utility MCCs to still earn rewards.
While the card never officially provided 5x rewards on utility bills, creative users found ways to leverage unexpected MCCs to maximize their rewards.
