How will BBPS improve the offline load experience - if they do not upgrade the Add Value Machines or integrate it with the gates?

I love and admire Rupay - I have NPCIs director and CTO's number in my contacts - haven't voted since 2014 (so no political bias).

I am speaking about the overall "current" experience. Things may improve in 1-10 years from now. But not "now" yet, especially when they are pushing the adoption.

The minimum recharge amount etc is decided by the Metro department and acquirer banks.

RuPay NCMC has nothing to do with it. If I’m not wrong, some Metros allow a minimum recharge of ₹10 or ₹20 on NCMC.

The minimum balance required is also decided by the Metro department and acquirer banks. RuPay NCMC has nothing to do with it.

SBI RuPay NCMC and Airtel RuPay NCMC are already live on BBPS. Just yesterday, I saw that HDFC RuPay NCMC Pune Metro has also gone live on BBPS.

In the next 2-3 years, online recharge for all NCMC cards will be available on all apps and offline channels/kiosks etc.

All metros worldwide operate using offline wallet payments.

Online Tap & Pay cannot handle peak hours, the issue is not with the metro terminals can be enabled with cabled internet. The problem is that bank servers go down frequently.

In Asia, Europe, the Middle East, etc 90% of metro users used offline wallet payments.

Visa/Mastercard Tap & Pay is mostly used by foreigners in Metro and a very limited number of people in Metros.

And the example you gave "airlines charge your card once you touch down" that technology is already live for RuPay cards as well in Flights, Hotel booking, Hospitals, Car rentals, Railways, Cab booking etc.

But Metros keep all this as a last option.

It's easy to implement these things in a small population.

For a large population, solutions are designed on a large scale to address problems effectively.

In India, banks and the Metro department handle these things.

In countries where a large population travels by metro, offline NCMC-type payments are used and that is the best solution.

India’s NCMC is an indigenous technology, It has been built from scratch, which is why updates are coming gradually, step by step.

Some African and Asian countries are also interested to implement India’s NCMC technology in their metro systems.

Anyway, in the end, I’ll just say that few things aren’t understood by people on day one.

Visa and Mastercard have been around for 60+ years but older Americans were completely confident in their younger days that Visa/Mastercard would never succeed. That’s why they never used them and ironically, those same people often fell victim to scammers.

Any technology in its 1st generation is always bad/worst,
2nd generation is ok,
3rd generation becomes usable/decent,
and 4th generation reaches the best category.

When UPI was in the development stage around 2015, I told my friends about it, but they didn’t understand.

Oh yeah, I just remembered—Congress party members also didn’t understand it. You must have heard what their ministers said in Parliament back then.

First of all, all the current non-NCMC metro payment systems are based on foreign technology. Which is being gradually phased out.

RuPay NCMC has recently introduced a self-balance update feature.

If you have NFC-enabled Android phone, you don’t need AVMs. You can update the balance yourself.

Download the Chalo app and update the offline balance on your NCMC card yourself (some other bank apps are also available).

2nd thing, Many NCMC machines are being installed in the Delhi Metro for self-balance updates. Work is likely underway in other metros as well -

Last thing, if not today, then tomorrow, this will have to be pushed forcefully.

When America introduced Visa/MasterCard and Japan NCMC systems like Suica/Felica and at one time even their people were forced to adopt them.
In America, there were many losses and problems due to Visa/Mastercard when the system wasn’t properly ready. But nothing can be done about it—at some point, it has to be enforced.

Some American restaurants and shop owners went bankrupt because there was no chargeback system (People used to forge signatures and walk away or later refused to pay because there was no legal binding). And when the chargeback system was introduced, both banks and merchants suffered losses in the billions of dollars every year as people exploited false chargebacks to get their money back.

Some Americans at that time also said that even after the chargeback, they didn’t get their money back and were scammed.

It took years to solve this and a complete international chargeback system had to be developed.

Take India's FASTag as an example. OMG! When FASTag was made mandatory, the govt and NPCI were heavily criticized on Twitter and YouTube because the service was terrible (Personally, I think some people and banks must have faced losses at that time due to FASTag).

But if they hadn’t enforced it, FASTag wouldn’t be working so smoothly today. Technology can only be properly tested on a large scale when it is implemented forcefully and that’s the only way its problems can be solved.

People will definitely face some issues for a few years, but everything will eventually be fine.

Anyway, NCMC is a very expensive project.

The NCMC Validation Terminal and AFC Gates have been co-designed and developed by CDAC and BEL. All the sub-systems are made in India and the IP remains with India.

Because of this, only a limited number of companies are currently able to develop these gates and terminals.

Don't they accept CC in your nearby BUS DEPOT?
Chennai metro station counter accepts CC. Visit once in a month to load and update your balance.
BEWARE - I was charged CONVENIENCE FEE for loading money using CC in metro station 2 years back
I'll check. My guess is that would count as offline transaction and will be useless for SBI cashback card.

Today i bought a SINGARA CHENNAI NCMC card at a MTC counter in Chennai
But its showing as UNAUTHORISED USER in transit.sbi website when i tried to register and check my balance using the CARD & MOBILE number.
Why is that?

Today i found out that no MTC counters accepts DC/CC for recharge. Only CASH

Use BBPS to recharge your SBI RuPay NCMC Card.

How to check my balance?
How to recharge? Can't find option in Paytm or gpay
Dnt know about paytm or gpay.

If you have NFC phone then you can check balance, also update balance in your offline NCMC card through Chalo app (location doesn't matter, manually change location to Mumbai).

No need to visit metro station to update your balance to offline NCMC Card.

Online recharge through BBPS (few apps name) -

SBI Unipay >> choose "NCMC Recharge" - https://customer.sbiunipay.sbi/CustomerPortal/quickPay

BHIM app >> go to BBPS bill payment section and choose NCMC Recharge

Shriram app >> go to bill payment section (home page choose "view all") >> now bill payments page >> Search option >> type "NCMC"

Park+ app >> go to bill payment page >> you will see "National Common Mobility Card" option

I think option also available on Airtel app.

Snapay app >> BBPS >> Metro >> Chennai Metro Rail Card number option available (i dnt know which card number required).

You can use UPI CC in the metro counter. I just recharged with 200. No charges also. You'll get 200 in the balance
