Hi, Just curious to know from everyone who recently has done the international journey and used airmiles points for ticket booking?

I just wanted to know which different places require how many airmiles and as well which airmile partner will be best suited for it

I have booked many in past 3 months for myself and friends. Have got superb savings.

One such occurrence, booked blr-lhr via turkish for 19k miles whereas revenue was 90k. Booking was done 2 weeks back hence saved lots of bucks.

It depends on your travel needs and requires lot of patience. Since award booking have their own issues like limited seats, phantom space etc

How was your experince with Turkish airlines, as I no where find the info on what will happen in cancellation or date change cases? As well, how is the call support there?? Any such experience you wanted to share

There is no one size fits. It all depends on the regions you are flying out from and the regions you are flying into. Also, in some cases, it depends on the airports you fly from and to. There are numerous examples of this.

Personally, I have used Lifemiles to fly LH in US-India routes. LM best books LH F due to low mileage. I have also used AP and United as well. It all depends on how you want to route your booking, which has the highest turnaround for mileage transfer. For a Europe trip I preferred United to make use of the excursionist trip (you can search if you don't know about it, it is covered well in many places), to have additional stops on the way. For example, I used the perk for a free journey from Rome to Copenhagen (also adding a layover in Frankfurt). I also have a US- India trip next month.

Everyone has their own preferences. You can see on this forum how people prefer TK for low mileage, but personally, I use them only if traveling within the same region, since they pass on YQ. I would be happy to use a United or Aeroplan and thereby decrease the cash component I spend from my pocket. So for traveling within India, you would be best using TK or Vistara. But if you are wanting to book LH, TK will pass on all the YQ making the out-of-pocket component high.

First, thanks for the detailed answer. Only one request, i am not sure what few acronyms means in your answer like LH, LM and TK

For call support, you need to keep calling until your ticket is booked. Turkish support centre sometimes dont know about star alliance award seats

Yeah, though Turkish airlines gives very good redemption option in terms of number of miles required, but the taxes are very huge in comparison to others

I have used 80,000 miles + approx Rs. 9500 for 2 persons to fly to Bali and back in economy class on Singapore airlines. Very smooth booking process by Singapore airlines and lots of options as well. Singapore airlines does not pass on the fuel surcharges so the taxes&surcharges component was quite reasonable. Saved me the 90k I would have to cough up to book revenue.

United and Singapore airlines are the 2 programs I transfer my Axis points to because both have good award seats availability and do not pass on fuel surcharges which translates to lower tax component on booking an award ticket. United for everything west of India & Singapore for everything east.

I also have the Vistara infinite which I used to book economy class round trips Bom to Del. 10,000 CV points + Rs. 1100. Good deal I’d say considering revenue tickets are nearly 12,000 as well.

SIN JFK
19 Hours Business Class
1,11,500 KF Miles*
Rs. 5500 Taxes
~ Revenue Rate 6-7 Lakh INR

SFO SIN
~17 Hours Business Class
1,28,500KF Miles
Rs. 600 taxes
~ Revenue Rate 5-6 Lakh INR

*Spontaneous Escape.

Cheers !

This was a steal ! I wonder what should be the optimal way of finding best deals.

Have done lot of domestic and international award redemption all are good worthy redemptions but this Particular award flight is so special for me.

Being a football fan, FIFA 2022 is one such event I wouldn’t want to miss. So getting match tickets was the hardest (IYKYK)

Got the match tickets through resale portal for quarter finals 4 days before the match. Cheapest Flight tickets from any point in india to Doha were ₹50,000+ Which was economy class from indigo HYD - DOHA.
QR Economy award not available from any point in india

Transferred axis miles & Amex (30% bonus promo was going on) to Qatar as lucky to see business class award seat available from mumbai. Booked it on business class as hotel check in is at 3PM.
QR AVIOS REQUIREMENT is way less from BOM/DEL than MAA/BLR/COK.

Took train to mumbai and took the Mumbai - Doha on Qatar airways A350 on business class (Q SUITES) for 26000 AVIOS * ₹10,000 taxes. (business class revenue fare for same flight was in ₹1.5 lakh+)

Return ticket not booked. Had 26,000 AVIOS in account in hope to see award seat to be open. Through some contact got tickets for the FIFA 2022 SEMI FINAL & FINALS.

Once all the match was over, Went to al the websites and Checked revenue fare to any route in india, cheapest was ₹65,000 Doha to Kozhikode on Air india express.
Next up Qatar website, Economy award flight sold out on all routes and was lucky to have one award seat on Doha - Delhi on Qatar airways - Boeing 787 on business class for 26,000 AVIOS + ₹10,000 taxes (Same flight business class revenue fare was in ₹1.5 lakh+)

Booked it.
Reached DELHI had to travel 48h+ in train (booked Tatkal ticket) back to home down south.

But it all worth it for the matches that was witnessed live at Qatar.

What else do we earn miles for, if not to get once in a lifetime experiences 😍
