Star Health Insurance - Renew or Port ?

I’ve been using Star Health Insurance for the past two years, chosen after comparing plans on PolicyBazaar. I renewed it last year despite coming across numerous negative reviews and concerns about their claim settlement ratio.

Now, my renewal is due in January, and I’m having second thoughts. The claim settlement ratio seems quite poor, and I’ve heard that several hospitals are no longer accepting Star Health policies.

I opted for their comprehensive plan to cover my mother (57), who doesn’t have any pre-existing conditions. While the coverage seemed great initially, I’m now considering switching to a more reliable insurer. I’ve also heard about the option to port health insurance policies—does anyone have experience with this? Is it better to port my policy or start fresh with a new one?

I’m currently based in Chennai and would really appreciate suggestions for a dependable health insurance provider. If you’ve had good experiences with any insurers, especially for claims and hospital acceptance, please share your recommendations. Thanks in advance!

I have A Plus Health Insurance Policy from Universal Sompo General Insurance. My claims experience has been good. Cashless processing was quick during my fathers hospitalisation and discharge formalities also smooth. Reliable company. Recommended to all.

I renewed my Star Health policy recently for me and my parents, I had a good experience overall. Although I had some initial doubts after reading mixed reviews, I decided to stick with them as their network hospitals are still quite extensive. I would recommend contacting their customer support directly if you have specific questions—they were able to clarify many of my concerns regarding cashless claims and hospital tie-ups.
Have you ever filed a claim on your policy?

I had good experience with their cashless claim this year in chennai, approval was received within 45mins and that too on Sunday. As far as i know that many treatments have waiting period of 2 years, so in your case renewing it will be beneficial for you. If required you can opt for add ons to be on safer side, consult their team for adding it.

I am from the insurance industry. What I heard is that star priced their products too aggressively and were too lenient with their underwriting practices to gain topline before listing and around the same time.

Ultimately, the crows came to roost - their claims exploded, and thus they started cutting corners, not paying full claim amounts or outright denying them to manage costs.

Would recommend Niva - good value for money, excellent features, and good settlement as well in private players space. I have personally purchased from them.

Rest up to you and good luck.

I have been a Star Health agent for the past 15 years and I have more than 50 happy customers. So far, I have helped many of my customers claim their hospitalisation and treatment expenses and they are referring me to their friends and relatives. Personally, in 2011 when I was involved in a serious road accident, with head injury, even my employer SB Cables didn't bear my hospital charges of 54000 though the owner Bhawarlal visited me in the hospital and assured my wife he will pay my hospital bills. My wife had to pledge her jewels to pay the hospital bills, because she was not aware of my insurance. After discharge from hospital I submitted all my bills to Star health and got my claim and redeemed my wife's jewels. Because of my personal experience I have got my full faith in Star health and so far I don't have any claim issues.

Porting does not add any extra waiting period. It will be same as your current policy.

My parents have one A Plus Health Insurance Policy from Universal Sompo. Although I have of some Govt. company which I never had to use.

Once my Father had to make a small claim from A Plus Universal Sompo. I remember that their cashless processing was very quick during my father’s hospitalisation and discharge formalities also smooth to an extent. Reliable service we experienced.

I would recommend to go for HDFC Optima Secure for better service, even when price could be little higher(10-15%). I am using this policy from last 7-8 years and claimed (70-80% insured value) every year for my mother (Arthritis regular treatment). I need to pay only 2-3k per admission.
Processing of claim is also faster, along with hospital coverage.
Did you get it offline or through a web aggregator (Ditto, etc)
