As we step into 2025, many are re-evaluating their financial choices, including which debit or credit cards to keep or close. Whether it's due to high fees, reduced benefits, better alternatives, or simply streamlining finances, card closures are a key part of financial management. Share your experiences—Which debit or credit card have you already closed or are planning to close in 2025, and what led to your decision?

Cards I have already closed in 2025 and the reasons for their closure.
Credit Cards:

  • HDFC Tata Neu Plus (Rupay) - HDFC was not upgrading my card to Infinity or any other HDFC Core card and the limit was quite low compared to my other cards, they gave me 1 LE from 45K to 74K.
  • ICICI Times Prime (Visa) - I acquired it solely as a collectible.
Debit Cards:
  • ICICI WM MC World upgraded to ICICI Wealth Select Visa Infinite.
Credit Cards: (Scheduled for closure upon renewal)
  • IDFC Ashva (Visa) - Depends on IDFC Renewal Benefits.
  • RBL BMS Play (MC) - Got it FYF from 2nd year doesn't make any sense after BMS discontinued the Superstar program.
  • SBM One Card (FD) (Visa) - Not getting an unsecured card upgrade offer will close after maturity.
  • Axis Neo (Rupay) - Upgrade to some other card.
Debit Cards: (Scheduled for closure upon renewal)
  • BOB Rupay Platinum(Blue One)
  • BOB Bharat Petroleum Rupay Platinum
  • BOB Sapphire - Devaluation in Airport Pick up & Drop Service.
Cards I am Planning to get in 2025:
  • ICICI Emerald Metal
  • HDFC CC will open a new account and wait for pre-approved offers
  • IDFC Private Metal DC
  • BOB Snapdeal LTF (Rupay)
  • Indusind Eazydiner Signature
  • RBL Shoprite LTF
  • Indusind Delight DC
  • Kotak 811 Super Account

Feel free to share your thoughts and portfolio.

1. I closed HDFC TATA NEU PLUS FOR SAME REASONS AS YOURS
2. Going to close Axis Ace as SBI CASHABC made it redundant.
BTW I have already opened HDFC SA. How long do I have to wait before preapproved offers?

An alternative to Yes Kiwi is BOB Snapdeal Rupay, HDFC Infinity, or BOB Eterna Rupay.
I also didn't use my AU Ixigo Visa LTF not even once. But keeping the card for Railway Lounge Access after IDFC Railway lounge devaluation.
I would suggest you upgrade your Axis Neo Card to My Zone LTF for better returns. Also, you can take Airtel Axis even if you pay Utility bills you can save more than the AF.

Thanks for initiating this thread. Good thought. My list goes like this:

HSBC Salary Account and Credit Card (To Close):
  • HSBC Salary account: I opened this last year, but I am not satisfied overall. It is not easy to bank with them and perform transactions. The lack of familiarity with their processes causes anxiety and makes it hard to trust them. Additionally, their processes are very slow. I am still waiting to receive some joining benefits from them. I expect to receive them within the next 1-2 weeks, and after that, I will close the account.
  • HSBC Platinum Credit Card: Similar to the bank account, I will be ending my relationship with HSBC, including this credit card. The only other option I might consider is the Live+ credit card, but for now, my expenses in the 10% category are covered by HDFC Swiggy and Pluxee cards, so I won't need this card either. Other than that, I will only reconsider if I am eligible for a Premier salary account (which will take a long time to reach a salary of 3L+). Until then, goodbye, HSBC.
HDFC Core Credit Card + Upgraded Banking:
  • I have an HDFC Preferred salary account and an easyshop platinum (Preferred branded) debit card. So far, I am very pleased with my overall experience with HDFC. Everything has been smooth and hassle-free. I am very delighted. I will see if I am eligible to upgrade from Preferred to Imperia. There is nothing special about it, but if I get it, that would be nice.
  • Credit card: I have Swiggy and Tata Neu Infinity cards, both are LTF but the limit is only 1.5L. First, I need to get a limit increase on these cards. Currently, both of these are my primary cards, and I spend almost 90% of my expenses on these 2 cards. Secondly, I need to see if I can get any core card (at least Regalia Gold or DCB) in the next 6-12 months without closing one of the existing cards. If I am eligible for RG LTF based on my salary or a tie-up with the company, that would be nice. Nevertheless, I am happy so far even without the core CC.
ICICI 0 MAB Privilege Account + Emeralde LTF:
  • Savings account: I had an ICICI WM salary account, but I closed it last year. The only benefit I got from them is the Sapphiro CC LTF. Apart from that, compared to HDFC, ICICI staff and customer care are completely clueless and unhelpful. It becomes more confusing if we ask them anything. So, I didn't want any more headaches and closed the salary account. But I am considering opening a 0 MAB privilege account because I like their iMobile app and the ease of online facilities.
  • Credit cards: I still have Amazon Pay and Sapphiro cards with a 10L limit. I have been seeing an upgrade option to Emeralde PVC paid (12000 + 12000) for more than 5-6 months in the iMobile app. However, I am looking for Emerale PVC LTF. It is not worth getting the paid version. Besides that, I am not looking for anything else from ICICI for the time being. (EPM is out of reach for me at least for now, I think)
SBI debit card upgrade:
  • My primary account is with SBI, but even after 10+ years, I still have the basic variant + silver tier. That's mainly because I don't maintain higher amounts in SBI accounts. The only thing I am looking for from SBI is to get the IRP card (Indian Oil Rupay Platinum Debit card).
DLB savings account & debit card upgrade:
  • My spouse has a savings account with Dhanalaxmi Bank. It is the basic variant account and has a Visa debit card. I am planning to upgrade it to a higher variant if available, along with the RPDC. The information on their website is not clear. I visited the nearest branch staff, but they were not helpful. I need to visit the home branch to get any details and upgrade.
Federal Celesta and Indusind Tiger:
  • These are the two unused cards in my wallet. I only took them for lounge access benefits and BMS movie benefits, but they are rarely used, maybe once in six months. I haven't decided whether to keep them or close them. (Most probably, I will keep them until they become completely devalued and useless like IDFC First Wealth).

Credit cards to close :

Sbi vistara Prime - All milestones achieved & fee waiver also given .
Axis Vistara Signature - Same Reason as above
Regalia gold - will upgrade to dcb
IndusInd eazydiner sig Ltf card - don’t dine out that much .
Biz black fd based - not much tax payments … my sister got that without having much knowledge. ( RM chipka diya fd pe )

Debit card to close :
Bob sapphire - they reduced distance from 40km to 25km … no use now .
