Same thing happened to me day before yesterday

Just wait for 2 hours after adding a new bill(I personally tried after 4-5hours with millennia DC) and it worked.
But no rewards tho
Also, yes, I had a brain-fart and didn't understand the very obvious error message shown. That's on me
 
Based on previous thread comments I am sure

Because after payment transactions showed as
CCBBPSNO which does not give points if you check previous comments

Was it showing SmartPay when the biller was added in Bill Pay of HDFC.

But I paid manually

Do try by fullfilling following conditions.

What I understand till now,
  1. Biller and bill should get registered for auto pay mode. (SmartPay Enabled should be there).
  2. The amount paid should match the amount of bill.
  3. Whether we let it go on auto mode or press button may not matter. This is my experience.
  4. And it would not ask for OTP for sure. For PIN, I need to recall.
