Axis Bank Introduces Mobile OTP – A Game Changer for Secure Banking!

🚀 Axis Bank is rolling out a new security feature – Mobile OTP! 🚀

If you use Axis Internet Banking, you know how important OTPs are for login and transactions. Until now, these OTPs were sent via SMS, but Axis Bank is now introducing Mobile OTP via the Axis Mobile App for a more secure and seamless experience.

What is Axis Mobile OTP?

Axis Mobile OTP allows users to generate OTPs directly from the Axis Mobile Banking App, eliminating the need to wait for SMS-based OTPs. This is useful when you have network issues or delays in receiving OTP messages.

Anyone Able To Change From In-App OTP To SMS OTP

Some of My Accounts Required SMS OTP And Some In-App OTP
Same question.

Having to open the app, then mobile OTP, then enter a mobile PIN, then press a button again to find the login OTP .. what nonsense.

Ideally I just want username password, but I can live with OTP via SMS. Does anyone know how to switch?

The login page says "Go to settings and go to 2FA" but I don't even see a 2FA option

Is there any way to disable this trash from AXIS MOBILE app and switch to SMS OTP? There is some error with my netbanking. After entering mobile OTP, it just stays on the mobile OTP page and never logs in. I am essentially locked out permanently out of netbanking. Only Axsh!t mobile works for now. Tried from 3 dozen browsers

I have not seen a stupider solution than this.

There is no fallback to SMS / Email OTP, if app isn't working / phone is off / phone is stolen.

If my phone and wallet was stolen, and I wanted to block my cards, there's absolutely no way to login to Netbanking, if I needed money urgently abroad and my phone is off / stolen, this stupid solution will lock me out of literally everything!

Tried explaining this to customer support but they are so dumb, they're just not willing to understand the issue at all!

I understand if they want people to use the app mostly, but there should be a button to fallback to Email or SMS OTP if the customer needs it. A complete penny wise pound foolish decision, charge the customer for OTPs if you have to but what is this stupid nonsense with no fallback!

Dumb Axis Product Managers!!!!

Axis, Yes Bank and SBI are terrible banks that lock us out of netbanking if phone is not accessible. Axis is now worse with dependency on the mobile app rather than SMS OTP

Update!

This is seriously frustrating! 😡 Every single time we log in, we now have to open the Axis Mobile app just to generate an OTP. It’s such a time-consuming process and a complete headache! Axis has made things unnecessarily complicated instead of improving security and user experience.

As we discussed earlier, the worst part is that we can’t even switch between SMS OTP and Mobile OTP easily. If we want SMS OTP, we have to deregister the app first, which is ridiculous. Why take away the flexibility we had before?

What do you all think? Are you facing the same frustration? 🚨

I definitely find it insane and I think after a while there will be enough customer backlash and they will give an option to disable it. Axis is the king of do-stupid-things-first-and-backtrack-later

I am with you on this one and shar ethe same feelings. They have to be more user friendly and internet banking access should be made quicker because thats the purpose. 😀

I/we have been using SBI SECURE OTP App since it's introductiion. It only generates OTP. It's so much useful when you travel abroad frequently and you need not worry about receiving OTPs in all n sundry places or at odd hours.

Nowadays, we rarely move without carrying our mobile. It has become a part of the body. Even purse, DL, CCs, IDs, watch.... are left behind - but NEVER our mobile.

So, I feel it is OK (and is much more convenient) to have such OTP generation tools on mobile phone.

I am a Techno Banker - since 1980 and used almost all innovations the banking arena seen in India n abroad since then. Even now, I/we bank with over a dozen banks.

So, my suggestion is : don't judge a product by hearsay or on impulsive opinions.

TRY IT FOR A MONTH OR TWO and then judge.

I completely agree! Axis has a track record of implementing frustrating policies and then rolling them back due to backlash. Hopefully, they realize how inconvenient this is before too many customers are affected. Let's see how long it takes for them to backtrack this time! 😅

Exactly! The whole point of internet banking is quick access, not jumping through extra steps just to log in. This added friction is unnecessary. Let’s hope Axis listens to customer feedback soon. 🙏

That’s a fair point. Mobile OTP apps do have their advantages, especially for frequent travelers. But the issue here is the lack of choice—Axis has completely removed the flexibility to switch between SMS OTP and Mobile OTP. If they allowed both options without forcing users to deregister, it would be a win-win for everyone.

Incredibly useful. I also like the Indie debit card’s temporary PIN. I wish more banks would adopt it.
True, features like temporary PINs and secure OTP generators are great when implemented well. The problem is that Axis has forced this change without considering different user preferences. If they made it an optional feature instead of mandatory, it would be much better!

It's the horrid implementation of Axis that's the problem and the dolts claiming how great and ingenious it is. They should call it Super Slow OTP. First we've to start Axis Mobile, then tap Mobile OTP, enter Axis Mobile MPIN, then tap "Generate login OTP" and enter it on the netbanking page. Are they INSANE? Why so many taps? If you're logged into Axis Mobile for some reason, you must log out to access "Mobile OTP". What kind of moron designed this feature? Plus the other day my netbanking password had expired and needed to be reset. Despite entering Mobile OTP, it remained on that page, locking me out of Axis netbanking for a week. After complaining they said Mobile OTP login was not yet updated to handle password expiring and forced reset. After a week, they fixed it.

Now compare this to another two-factor standard TOTP authentication app that does not use SMS but is still secure and fast e.g. Authy or Google Authenticator. I open Authy, I see the TOTP already, enter it. Done.

Now consider the way IDFC FIRST Bank has done it. They have introduced login to netbanking via passkeys. It can be enabled from netbanking. We can login directly via the PIN used for the Windows PC. It is extremely fast, after entering the bank account password on netbanking, we just authenticate with the PIN and it logs in. It also works with Windows Hello webcams or fingerprint readers. The PIN is far more secure than the traditional Windows password. The password is stored encrypted in a secured database but is still prone to brute-force attacks. The PIN uses the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) and the user provides the entropy. The TPM has anti-hammering features that thwart brute-force PIN attacks.

The private key for passkeys is more secure than TOTP 2 factor + password. IDFC does have another option to enable 2FA as well. It's not necessary nor mandatory to enable it, especially if you've enabled passkey login (they call it FIRSTkey). Anyway, they have left Axis far behind.
