Be careful with CRED Payments - CRED paid to Wrong Card Account

Today, I am bringing to light one incident which has happened last year in August when most of the banks were migrating to BBPS. I had initiated a payment of my Mother's (a senior citizen) ICICI card via CRED. The payment showed successful on the app but was not credited to the card. I erred by not verifying on ICICI app after the payment. I have been using CRED since 2020 for making my and my Parents card payments due to the convenience of timely reminders. I hadn't faced any problem with them in over 500 transactions.

My Mother's card details were already saved on CRED and payment used to be made by CRED using IMPS / NEFT. However, after the RBI instruction all banks migrated to BBPS in June - July last year.

CRED does not have an option to input registered number - last 4 digits which is necessary for making BBPS payments. Instead they require to input 16 digit card number, expiry / cvv to perform a token transaction to verify a card. This system is even followed today.

ICICI says that the payment has been made to a wrong card account. However, with BBPS which CRED claims to have used, it is impossible to make payment to a wrong card account. Billdesk confirmed that payment has been made to card no XXXX (My Mother's card) but are unable to verify the registered number used.

CRED could not have made a BBPS payment using my registered number and my Mother's card number since, BBPS would not have been able to fetch any details since I do not have an ICICI card with same last digits as my Mother's. Since, Billdesk has been able to verify the origin of the transaction, it seems that BBPS has been used by CRED and somehow the payment has been made to a wrong account ? This has me scratching my head.

I have been following up with CRED / ICICI and have escalated to the highest levels at ICICI but without any outcome.

This incident serves as a cautionary tale to anyone using CRED. Since, then I'm using other bill payment providers who are BBPS complaint unlike CRED. The amount involved was less than 5k in this case.

If anyone has had a similar experience, please come forward and provide details as to how this matter could be resolved. I request the Experienced Technofinoians and @TechnoFino for any inputs.

Best Regards

FYI, we don't have to enter CVV and perform a token transaction just to pay the CC bill via CRED, even though most people go through the process.

I installed it a few days ago (after it started fetching CIBIL), got some UPI cashback, added a new card without CVV or a token transaction. Sent the recently earned cashback to the card.

CVV and a token verification is needed only if you want to pay using that card (to online purchase or to use tap & pay).

That said... What happened to you is a serious concern, irrespective of the money involved.

I used to use CRED sparingly. So, haven't seen this issue, yet. So, no idea how it could be solved.

My guess is that CRED has screwed up and they'd be least likely to admit. Never trusted them. They never responded to me in writing. Whenever I send them a feedback, I only get a call to discuss what I wrote.

If you ever get anything in writing from CRED, approach RBIO without hesitation and ask for the maximum compensation for what happened.

CRED is full of red flags, from what I observed.

Thanks for pointing this out. I’ll keep it in mind. Unfortunately, I’m unable to find Cred / Dreamplug Technologies on RBI ombudsman portal. It seems they aren’t a RE as per RBI’s definition.

Call me option won't show up if you don't have any open ticket. You can open a ticket via chatbot. It's little complicated but you can explore options in chatbot. If you can't find your issue in chatbot then choose any other random issue to just create a ticket. Then in existing conversations it will show you call me button.

Thanks but cred is liable since they made payment to a wrong card number via bbps. Not regular NEFT / IMPS

Man cred is the worst.. Their rewards are an insult to the users intelligence

Plus requires endless scrolling.. Upar se god only knows what they do with the data they horde

It's better to use debit cards to pay if you care for meaningful rewards

Or if looking for convenience just use the bank's own platform to make payment

Or best convenience with no reward is paying using banks own savings account... One click instant cleared

None of the use cases imo yield themselves to use cred..

Just checked. You are right. I can find PhonePe, Mobikwik, Slice, etc, but not CRED (Dreamplug). A big red flag for future CRED users.

An user from X also confirmed that CRED is not available in RBI RE list.

There is only one place where I saw Dreamplug was mentioned as (Online Payment Aggregator)....

A little off topic.....
This is also the behavior of quite a few Pvt Banks in India.

They will speak nicely on a call and the email post that will be > 'As discussed on call, you queries have been resolved '

Despite various issues posted on forums and YouTube, people still use Cred. All credit goes to the beautiful user interface.
Payment was made via bbps. How could this have happened ? Cred cannot fetch a non existant card with a registered nunber. There is some flaw in the system which needs to be addressed.
