Buying American Express MR Points

Walter White

As per what is mentioned on the American Express website, one can purchase MR points upto INR 10000 in value at 40p per MR every year.

Is the cap on a per card or per account basis?

From what I know, the capping is only limited to max points one can purchase in a year. You are allowed to repeat the same process every year

Why on earth one will buy MR points from Amex? The best value you can get is around that only except Taj vouchers. There is hardly any arbitrage worth mentioning or looking for Amex MR points.

I was looking to book flights on Cathay Pacific for around 26k points. I had 10k Asia miles in my account already, and 28k MR points in Amex (which would translate to 14k Asia miles). I was running short of 2k miles. So, buying 4k points for Rs. 1600 was a great option for me.
This is just 1 scenario in which this can be useful.
Also, you can get a value of Rs 0.5 for each point quite comfortably. So, it is a net positive deal to buy points when you are running short.

Ones who want to stay at Marriott, for them buying at 40 paise is a great deal especially when they get more than 1 Re or so on certain properties
Can you share me 10 properties of Marriott in India which are available at 100ps per point or so..? I think I am searching wrong properties so far. Need to learn from the experienced ones this loyalty game

Top up can be a good and solid reason.

I remember even buying IHG points at max price to top up last 10% required to redeem a room.

I was just going to mention the thread that Walter white posted. Let me tell you that aspirational travellers will definitely find such gaps, in fact there's a big buy/sell market out there for Marriott points owing to the fact that the points can be transferred to anyone (with certain restrictions)

Mariott gives good returns on paying using MB in India. In Europe, the redemption rates are pathetic from what I have seen.

You can use to book London tickets. Virgin Atlantic needs 20k MR points(40k MR points in peak season) + ~100 pounds and availability is quiet decent. If planned well you can get more than 5 award tickets.
So, for 20k MR points, it gives more than Rs.1 value per MR.

The other option is qatar/BA. And currently they are running 30% transfer offer. So, if you are transfer 10k points you will get 13k points.

If you do research properly, you can easily find better value of this MR.

Great find. Nothing in Delhi, Mumbai, Goa etc, but hope soon we may see some good options there as well. Most of the time the places I tend to visit or want to redeem it is rarely beyond 50ps.

Virgin is a very good option but a local redemption is ideal .. like IHG, marriott or Vistara etc for people like me.. for high flyers those international award space might give excellent value.

Yeah. Domestic redemption doesn't have lot of options. I usually use my points(MR/ER/DCB points) for international trip. Most of them gives > Rs. 1 value.
For domestic I use Credit card through traveledge or other portal to earn points which is used for International trips 😛

Finding better values for domestic usage is very time consuming. You need to find sweet spots. Whereas in international trip, you need less research to get sweetest spots.
