ICICI Bank Times Black Credit Card Application Process Experience & My Opinion - Dr.Anand456

As a customer, I decided to explore the ICICI Bank Times Black Credit Card (marketed as a premium offering) in depth. While the application process was seamless, my overall experience has been underwhelming. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the card’s strengths, weaknesses, and overall practicality:

---

Application Experience

I received a message from Times Black stating that the application process for the card had opened. Given that existing ICICI Bank customers were reportedly getting approved easily, I decided to give it a try. To my surprise, the card was approved within a minute, without requiring detailed documentation or a CIBIL inquiry. It even appeared in my app instantly.

While the process was quick and effortless, it raises concerns about exclusivity. If a card marketed as “premium” is so easily accessible, it loses the prestige it aims to convey.

---

Strengths

1. Premium Appeal:
The card is marketed as an exclusive, high-net-worth offering, targeting customers seeking a prestigious image.

2. Milestone-Based Rewards: The card provides milestone rewards, making it appealing to users with significant monthly expenses.

3. Effortless Approval: For existing ICICI customers, the application and approval process is straightforward and hassle-free.

---

Weaknesses

1. Lack of Movie Benefits:
Despite being branded as premium, the absence of movie or lifestyle benefits is disappointing. Many mid-tier cards offer such perks, making this omission noticeable.

2. High Spending Criteria: Most benefits, including the ₹25 lakh annual spend for a fee waiver, are designed for individuals with exceptionally high spending capacity. This makes the card impractical for average customers.

3. Limited Rewards Rate: For a premium card, the rewards rate is underwhelming and falls short compared to competitors.

4. Shared Credit Limit: If you already hold multiple ICICI Bank cards (like I do), the credit limit is shared across all cards. This restricts your ability to fully utilize the Times Black Credit Card.

5. High Fees Without Justification: The joining and annual fees (₹20,000 + GST each) feel excessive given the limited rewards and benefits.

6. Potential Devaluation: Based on trends, there’s a concern that the card’s benefits may decrease further over time, reducing its long-term value.

---

Overall Experience

This card seems to struggle between appealing to regular customers and catering to high-net-worth individuals. While it may be worth trying for a year, its lack of unique benefits, stringent criteria for rewards, and shared credit limits make it unlikely to retain customer interest in the long run.

---

Suggestions for Improvement

1. Add competitive movie or lifestyle benefits to match other premium cards in the market.

2. Lower the annual fee waiver criteria to make the card more accessible and appealing.

3. Enhance the rewards structure to provide better value for high-net-worth customers.

---

Final Verdict

The ICICI Bank Times Black Credit Card has potential but falls short of delivering on its promise of exclusivity and practicality. The high fees, restrictive rewards, and lack of additional credit capacity make it a less appealing option for both average and premium users.

Unless ICICI Bank reconsiders its approach and improves the card’s benefits, I predict many customers (myself included) will cancel it after the first year. At its current state, it’s not a card I’d recommend for long-term use.

>Lack of Movie Benefits

I have never been able to understand why Indians are so obsessed with their movie benefits. A movie with your family costs a ₹1000 at best and how many times are you going to the movies anyway to justify a card with 20k annual fees? Every other card from every bank has discounts on BMS nowadays so nobody is paying full price for movies anyway. A Luxury card having movie benefits cheapens it in my eyes since that ‘benefit’ is not even worth mentioning and a moot point at best.

Other than this, Good Review OP. Keep it up.

The point isn't how much we can save on movies with this card. The point is, if even an entry-level card can offer good movie benefits, why can't a premium card offer the same? For some people, movie benefits matter; for others, they don't. My point is that a premium card should include all types of benefits.

When this card is being issued even to average users, they would naturally expect movie benefits and other perks so that they can easily recover the card's fees.

That's all. And thank you for your complimen t.

Has anyone else been charged joining fees on this card recently? I just got charged today. I think the bank has started applying joining charges to everyone one by one.

I also noticed something else: the card is virtually available on the iMobile app and also in the Times Black app, but the CVV is not visible. I even tried making a transaction, but I couldn't proceed due to the absence of the CVV.

Additionally, there’s no update about the physical delivery of this card yet. I haven’t received any message regarding the card being dispatched either.

Does anyone else have any updates about this? And has anyone else been charged joining fees for this card? Please share your thoughts below.

Yes, I got charged the fees, but no update on the physical delivery of the card. For me CVV is visible on the iMobile app, but I am thinking of canceling the card. I confirmed from ICICI customer care that if I cancel the card before activating it, then they will refund the joining fees + GST.

It looks like the trend of canceling the Times Black credit card has officially started today, and this could signal a turning point for both users and the company. While Times Black may have been celebrating the initial wave of interest and the large number of new cardholders, the real test of the card’s success is just beginning.

As the cancellation requests start pouring in, it’s likely to leave a significant impact. Many users might have signed up out of curiosity or due to the initial hype, but the card’s actual value will only become apparent over time. A year down the line, people will truly assess whether the promised benefits are as useful as they seem or if they fall short of expectations.

Moreover, the exclusivity aspect of the card is something to watch closely. If Times Black fails to offer unique or impactful benefits, users will have little reason to retain the card. On the other hand, if the company can deliver on its claims and provide genuine value, they might still retain a loyal customer base.

This situation is a pivotal moment for Times Black. Their response to user feedback and their ability to prove the card’s worth will determine whether this becomes a success story or a cautionary tale. Let’s see how this unfolds in the coming months.

Getting recliner/ gold seats in movie theatres for example cost anywhere between 600-1200 per ticket in metro and tier 1 cities. Having a card that provides BOGO with a cap of say 800 or 1000 (cap of 200-250 is essentially BS) can help you save around 3-5k per year. A luxury card is meant for enjoying luxuries and far fewer people will enjoy the luxury of recliner seats if it is not for such benefits!

Finally, I received the card dispatch message and email. Today, I also spoke with my Relationship Manager (RM), and the Visa Infinite Private Bank Debit Card was successfully issued to me. This card isn’t directly available to anyone; it requires a specific process. Even my personal RM didn’t have complete knowledge about it.

To get this card, you need to call ICICI Bank customer care and speak to the Product Service Manager. Only they can take your request for this card. However, you need to meet the eligibility criteria. Simply having a Private Banking status won’t be enough.

Important Points:

1. Availability Based on Location:

ICICI Private Banking services are only available in selected metro cities. Your location must be eligible for these services before you can claim any offers related to this card.

2. Activation Requirement:

If your account has been upgraded solely for this card, you need to activate the card first to unlock its features. If anyone thinks they can get this card, gain Private Banking status, and then cancel the card, they should reconsider, as it could be costly. Once the card is closed, your account might be downgraded after some time.

3. Charges and Lifetime Free Benefits:

If the card is issued to you as a Private Account holder, it is lifetime free. However, if you request the debit card without Private Account benefits, charges may apply later.

Advice:

Think carefully before requesting this debit card or availing of any offers. If used without proper understanding, it could lead to unnecessary expenses or complications.

In typical ICICI fashion, this card somehow has picked up the disadvantages of all super premium cards without picking up a single useful benefit: has bad limits, bad reward point system, pointless benefits (Quorum club discount?), terrible milestones, no hotel/miles memberships, terrible exclusivity (marketed as super premium, but easier to get than EPM??)

Seems like some accountants at ICICI just decided to take Quorum club discount (of all things), gathered some random benefits (always, cut benefits to the bone, must guarantee profit for the bank 🙄), and the marketing team brought some scrap metal from Times Group and tried to spin it around as a super exclusive offering (which lets anyone with a spare 20k in - it quite literally doesn't even have a income eligibility criteria)

My guess would be that the management at ICICI will review the card in a month and decide that it offers way too much benefits compared to other ICICI cards (disregard that there was a 20k fee ofc), and will try and devaluate every benefit not in the welcome benefits (most probably, starting with capping of Quorum club discount to something like 1k, allow concierge benefit only after a few lakhs spend, clamp down reward points even further), and add something pointless like a (carefully cut down) Times Prime membership

Don't you think this is a total waste of your time and energy??
why did you apply for this useless card in the first place?

Most of the super-premium cards launched last year have been a flop whether it be ICICI Times, IDFC Ashwa and Mayura, HSBC Taj, and the likes.

One of the reason is - it is hyped as super premium card, so people expect a lot than what's out there in the market currently.
But unfortunately due to the credit card buzz over the last few years, many premium, mid-range cards already offer great benefits, so it is very difficult for a super premium card to overcome and offer something much more than what a normal card offers.

Another reason is high fees. Even for less than half the fees, people are getting premium to mid range cards with good benefits (spend based and non-spend based lifestyle benefits) why should they pay hefty fees for a luxury card and get mediocre benefits?

So we can assume that either it is time for the banks to devalue the mid-segment cards and cut down the benefits or they are finding it difficult to bring out something catchy and exciting for the HNI users.

Benefits is what is holding people back. After paying huge fees and being branded as a luxury or HNI card, people expect good benefits. If banks can't offer something exciting, all the luxury card launches will be a flop only.

No, Not at all. It was just a 5mins effort to apply. I wanted to check whether the card will be approved for me or not, but it was approved instantly.
